From science fiction to the real world, it was only a few years ago that the only place most people could envision artificial intelligence (AI) was in movies like The Matrix, Age of Ultron, or Blade Runner. But Vinay Kumar, a seasoned professional with over 20 years of experience in the field and the Senior Vice President of Engineering at Veryon, has been at the forefront of AI development for quite some time.
"I was very passionate about AI before any of these large language models came out," said Vinay. "I have fond memories of participating in AI competitions in my earlier years. One of my best moments was a competition where my team had built an AI player for a chess-like game Stratego. I knew AI would impact every industry at some point, but I never thought we'd come this far, this fast."
Before computers were the complex electronic machines we know today, and AI was a common and controversial buzzword, Vinay had been particularly fond of the machine's potential and the unlimited possibilities of capitalizing on AI.
"Artificial Intelligence is already having game-changing effects on improving aviation operations," said Vinay. "The ramifications for how AI can improve aviation as a whole will be disruptive to the industry."
At Veryon, Vinay and his team are dedicated to pushing the limits of product innovation, marketing, research and development, and operations. Their relentless efforts keep the company at the forefront of technology, providing aviation maintenance teams with cutting-edge tools and insights to handle the complexities of aviation operations.
Computers and artificial intelligence have come a long way since their inception when they were initially designed for calculations. In today's world, not only can you store, process, and retrieve data, but you can also do a myriad of other tasks.
As technology advances at an accelerated rate, computers nowadays perform extremely complex tasks, allowing AI to reshape many industries, including the modern-day aviation industry. Beyond predictive maintenance and operational analytics, AI is reshaping various aspects of aviation operations, from enhancing flight safety to optimizing aircraft readiness.
Set to be unveiled this summer, Veryon is launching its AI-powered chat assistant inside of its Veryon Publications platform. Created by Veryon's in-house engineering team, this AI assistant offers instant insights using a rich knowledge base from OEMs and operators. Users can chat with the AI assistant, asking open-ended questions to get quick and accurate responses. Whether you need clarification on procedures or parts, help with troubleshooting or access to other critical information; the AI assistant provides rapid answers from an extensive repository of industry-specific knowledge.
In a recent Q-and-A session, Vinay shared more about AI, how it's changing the industry, what's next for Veryon, and more.
Question:
How do you think AI is changing the aviation industry as a whole?
A: I think everybody is taking a similar approach, but you'll see aviation has its own unique way. This industry moves a little slower because you must get it right. You're dealing with aircraft safety, so you can't make mistakes. You've really got to spend time doing it well because this isn't just a chatbot to help you write a Word document.
Everyone's playing with AI, but for us, it's about focusing on what value we can provide to our customers. People are starting to realize that having access to these large data sets and having the right expertise in aviation and technology is critical to driving value.
I think we'll start seeing a lot more partnerships that didn't exist before. These partnerships can potentially revolutionize the industry as they foster the development of groundbreaking solutions that could reshape the entire aviation landscape.
Question:
Where do you think aviation software or Veryon's products and solutions will be in 5 years, and how different will they be?
A: If you saw our products two years ago and then looked at them today, you'd see they are very different. Veryon Tracking has many more capabilities with the introduction of Work Center. Our Diagnostics product has also flipped on its head and has been completely redone from its look and feel to the technology under the hood. We're putting a lot of focus on Veryon Publications this year. The AI-powered assistant component is just a small portion of the work being done inside of that application.
By continuing to invest in artificial Intelligence and deliver against our platform strategy, we will make Veryon’s products simpler and more effective than anything imagined in the industry. Aside from our visionary work, existing customers really need a lot of things, and we're working diligently to meet their requests.
Question:
What's next for Veryon?
A: Internally, we are definitely at the forefront of adopting AI in our daily processes and culture. Customers will see this in the form of an increase in pace across all departments. Everything from shipping quality software to onboarding and supporting aircraft will only get faster and faster.
In terms of products, we're working on an AI-powered chat assistant for the Veryon Publications platform, which we will launch soon.
Conclusion
AI has rapidly transitioned from the realm of science fiction to a tangible force driving innovation across industries. In aviation, the integration of AI is not merely a futuristic vision but a present-day reality, fundamentally transforming operations and safety protocols. As AI technology continues to evolve, the advancements made by Veryon and similar pioneers will undoubtedly pave the way for a safer, more efficient, and innovative future in aviation. The sky is not the limit; it is just the beginning.
